The construction of the Aswan High Dam was initiated by Gamal Abdel Nasser and designed to control the Nile River, to create hydro-electricity for Egypt and to increase arable land in Egypt by one third, more than double its current power resources and create the world's largest man-made lake, Lake Nasser. القاهرة - في الوقت الذي بدأت فيه مصر خطوات جادة تجاه تنفيذ مشروع تحويل نهر النيل الى خط ملاحي يربط البحر المتوسط وبحيرة فيكتوريا في منابع النيل، وهو المشروع الذي تم اعتماده من قبل رؤساء الدول في القمة الافريقية يناير 2013، واعتبار مصر هي المسئول الأول عنه، وتبناه البنك الافريقي للتنمية و6 من دول حوض النيل الى جانب مصر خلال أعمال القمة الافريقية الماضية.

إلا أن المشروع مثار جدل واسع بالقاهرة حاليا بين الخبراء، ولوجود عقبات كثيرة ستقف أمام التنفيذ تتعلق بطبيعة النهر نفسه.
