El sultán omaní Haitham bin Tariq se reunió por primera vez con el presidente ruso Vladimir Putin el martes, durante una histórica visita a Moscú en la que Omán y Rusia firmaron una serie de acuerdos sobre transporte, financiación del terrorismo y otras áreas. El viaje se produce en un momento en que Omán desempeña un papel clave en la mediación de las conversaciones nucleares entre Estados Unidos e Irán.
El sultán Haitham, quien ascendió al trono en 2020, llegó a Moscú el lunes por la noche y recibió una ceremonia de bienvenida el martes. Su delegación incluía al viceprimer ministro de Defensa, Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said, al ministro de Asuntos Exteriores, Badr Al Busaidi, al director de la Autoridad de Inversiones de Omán, Abdulsalam Al Murshidi, y a otros, según la Agencia de Noticias Omaní.

El sultán y Putin ya habían hablado por teléfono en 2023 en el primer contacto bilateral de alto nivel entre Rusia y Omán, según informó la agencia oficial de noticias rusa Tass. Omán estableció relaciones con la Unión Soviética en 1985.
Putin expresó su interés en mejorar la cooperación en los sectores de energía, comercio y agricultura con Omán durante la reunión, y agregó que Rusia planea organizar una cumbre con los estados árabes en 2025. Por su parte, Sultan Haitham dijo que alentó a las empresas rusas a abrir oficinas en Omán durante una reunión con empresarios en Moscú el mismo día, según un comunicado del Kremlin.
