Morsi and Egypt's Military

Yezid Sayigh analyzes Egypt's civil military relations under President Mohammed Morsi.

A soldier stands in front of a mural depicting Egypt's former President Hosni Mubarak (R), former Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi (C) and Egypt's President Mohamed Mursi drawn on the wall of the presidential palace in Cairo December 12, 2012. Egypt's liberal and secular opposition said on Wednesday it would back a "no" vote in a referendum on a divisive new constitution promoted by Islamist President Mursi, calling off a boycott as long as safeguards are in place for a fair vote. Palestine to Bid For Observer Status at UN General Assembly

The Palestinian Authority will seek non-member observer status for Palestine at the UN. The PA has a good chance of securing the majority vote it needs, but some member-states may oppose or abstain if they come under sufficient US pressure, writes Yezid Sayigh. The PA has good reason to hesitate on going through with a formal application.

Morsi Versus the Military Council

Despite the SCAF’s ever tightening grip on key Egyptian political institutions, President Mohammed Morsi still has room to lay the groundwork for democracy, writes Yezid Sayigh. Morsi needs to both challenge the SCAF and forge a working relationship with any new parliament in order to consolidate meaningful civilian authority.

Egypt's Islamist President-elect Mohamed Mursi looks at the crowd that had gathered for his speech in Cairo's Tahrir Square June 29, 2012. Mursi took an informal oath of office on Friday before tens of thousands of supporters in Cairo's Tahrir Square, in a slap at the generals trying to limit his power. Is Direct Syrian Intervention In Lebanon Inevitable?

The danger of the Syria crisis spilling over Lebanese borders is increasing by the day, writes Yezid Sayigh, of the Carnegie Middle East Center. If that happens, Lebanon will edge closer to the tipping point of its own delicate internal balance.
