بعد ليلة طويلة من القصف المتبادل بين القوات الحكومية والمجموعات المسلحة في محافظة نينوى شمال العراق، قرّر أحمد المصلاوي، الفرار وعائلته إلى إقليم كردستان، لكنه عندما استفاق صباحاً، وجد أن المدينة قد سقطت بيد التنظيمات المتشدّدة، وأن القصف قد توقّف.

لم يتوقّع المصلاوي، بحسب اتصاله مع "المونيتور"، أن يكون سيناريو سقوط المدينة بهذا الشكل، فسكّان الموصل، كانت توقعاتهم بأن ما سيحصل في مدينتهم مشابهاً لما حصل في محافظة الانبار غرب العراق، التي استمرت فيها العمليات العسكرية الحكومية لمدة تجاوزت الستة أشهر.
