Israel's military intelligence chief, Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, resigned Monday, acknowledging that the directorate he headed failed to prevent the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

In his resignation letter, addressed to IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, Haliva wrote that “along with authority comes heavy responsibility.”

“The Intelligence Directorate under my command did not fulfill its task. I have carried that black day with me ever since, every day, every night. I will forever bear the terrible pain of the war.”

Haliva added, "Throughout my different positions, I always knew that alongside the authority lies heavy responsibility. As soon as the war started, I expressed my willingness to take responsibility and end my term. With half a year behind us, I ask to leave the IDF once the investigation phase is over."
