International soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement from Portugal’s national team on Thursday, though he is expected to continue playing for Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr for the remainder of the season.

What happened: Ronaldo released an emotional farewell video addressed to Portugal fans, declaring, “The day has come to hand back the number seven shirt of the national team that belongs to us all.”

“At the end of the day, football is so much more than just a game. Football is about the people,” he said in Portuguese.

Ronaldo did not discuss his future with Al Nassr in the video. ESPN and Arab News reported that he is expected to remain with the Riyadh-based club for the rest of the Saudi Pro League season, having signed a two-year contract extension in 2025.
