An Iranian police officer was killed in an armed attack on a patrol in southeastern Iran’s Sistan and Baluchistan province, the latest in a series of deadly clashes to occur in the restive region.

What happened: A police commando unit was patrolling the Lakhshak area in the city of Zahedan when armed gunmen opened fire at their vehicle. Police returned fire and a shooting ensued, resulting in the killing of Vahid Enayat, Sistan-Baluchistan police said in a statement carried by Iran’s state-run news agency, IRNA.

Several gunmen were wounded during the exchange of fire and fled the scene, prompting a manhunt.

No group has claimed responsibility. Police described the incident as a “terrorist attack” but did not identify the perpetrators.
