How Israel opposition infighting is boosting Netanyahu days before election
Discord within the opposition, including its reluctance to name a single candidate for prime minister ahead of the Oct. 27 election, is working in Netanyahu’s favor.
JERUSALEM — Opposition parties say they are united in their effort to topple Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, but they cannot agree on who should replace him or what a future coalition might look like.
That disarray is one of Netanyahu’s greatest assets ahead of the Oct. 27 vote, as the country remains mired in the longest war in its history.
Although this is the first election since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack, the overriding question remains the same as it has been for more than a decade: Will Israelis reelect Netanyahu, Israel's longest-serving premier? Netanyahu remains a major political force despite presiding over the greatest catastrophe in Israel’s history — a striking paradox that says much about the man, the country and the state of the opposition bloc vying to unseat him.
