TEL AVIV — Israel remains in the dark about the content of the “great settlement” that President Donald Trump announced Thursday as ending the war with Iran. Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the emerging deal the same day, but judging by a statement the premier's office subsequently issued, Israel's leadership remains uncertain about what it includes.

In the statement, Netanyahu's office said that while Israel is not a party to the memorandum of understanding, the prime minister welcomes Trump’s commitment that any final agreement "will include the removal of enriched material, the dismantling of enrichment infrastructure, limitations on missile production, and the cessation of Iran’s support for its terrorist proxies in the region.”

According to some Israeli assessments, Netanyahu’s list, it seems, consists mostly of wishful thinking.

A senior Israeli source told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity, “This announcement actually contains our redlines, in an attempt to remind Trump that these used to be his redlines as well. What will be left of them at the end of the road, we'll wait and see.”
