A senior Russian official on Wednesday expressed renewed support for expanding Iran's nuclear energy capacity, underscoring deepening Kremlin support as Tehran holds talks with Washington over its nuclear program.

What happened: Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov told reporters in Tehran that Russia is “actively working” with the Iranian government on the construction of the second and third units at the Bushehr nuclear power plant. He added that equipment for the structures has been ordered and is currently being manufactured in Russia, the official Tass news agency reported.

“We are also currently working with a joint working group on the construction of additional high-power and low-power units in Iran,” said the minister, without specifying where the other units would be located.

Tsivilyov is in Tehran on an official visit and attended a session of the Permanent Iranian-Russian Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation on Wednesday alongside Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad.
