ANKARA — Turkey’s National Security Council publicly established its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on Wednesday, elevating the Horn of Africa country to a formal national security priority in the wake of Israel’s surprise recognition of Somaliland in December.

The NSC noted its “support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia” in a declaration released after its bimonthly meeting chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The declaration went on to say that Turkey would continue to stand by the Somali people in their fight against terrorist organizations and reaffirmed Ankara’s backing of the country’s unity and borders.

The declaration marks the first time the council has explicitly framed Somalia’s territorial integrity as a national security issue at its bimonthly meetings.
