Turkey secures COP31 climate summit after compromise with Australia: What to know
The agreement follows a two-year diplomatic tug-of-war between Ankara and Canberra to host the global event.
ANKARA — Turkey is set to host the COP31 climate summit after Ankara and Canberra reached a compromise to conclude their two-year competition for the conference, according to an official Turkish source and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Details: Turkish and Australian officials struck the deal late Wednesday on the sidelines of COP30, in Belem, Brazil, the Turkish official source told Al-Monitor.
Under the compromise, Turkey will hold the COP31 presidency and host the leaders’ summit, and Australia will chair the negotiations, with some meetings hosted by Pacific island countries.
"What we've come up with is a big win for both Australia and Turkey," Albanese was quoted as saying by Reuters later Thursday.
