RSF’s el-Fasher takeover kills 2,300 in Sudan as UAE accused of aiding militia
Videos coming out of the captured North Darfur city show scenes of brutal violence and devastation, with hospitals turned into “slaughterhouses” and civilians executed in the streets.
More than 2,000 people were killed during the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces’ capture of el-Fasher, the last major city in Darfur that had been held by the Sudanese army, Sudan’s deputy commissioner for humanitarian aid said Wednesday.
Commissioner Mona Nour El-Daem added that the RSF had targeted medical convoys and kidnapped medical staff, “demanding a ransom of $2,500 per person.”
Minister of Culture, Information and Tourism Khalid Al-Aisran separately put the number of victims at 2,377, according to a Wednesday report from Sudan’s state news agency, SUNA.
On Sunday, the RSF declared victory in el-Fasher after months of siege that left an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 people trapped inside the city. On Monday, the RSF said in a statement posted to Telegram that its fighters were working to “eliminate the last of the terrorists and mercenaries’ strongholds.” Videos circulating online in recent days appear to show scenes of mass executions, mutilated bodies and celebrations by RSF fighters following their takeover.
