RSF hits Darfur hospital as cholera, dengue fever spread in war-torn Sudan
A Sudanese medical organization said a dozen people were killed after the RSF shelled one of the last operating hospitals in El Fasher, as Sudan’s collapsing health system battles cholera and dengue fever.
An attack by Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces left a dozen people dead at El Fasher Hospital in North Darfur, one of the few remaining medical facilities operating in the besieged city.
A statement from the Sudan Doctors’ Network on Wednesday said that the RSF had shelled El Fasher Hospital, “causing the death of 12 people and injuring 17 others, including a female doctor and nursing staff.”
The network's statement came after an Agence France-Presse report of an RSF attack on the hospital’s maternity ward Tuesday, which was said by medical sources to have killed eight people and injured seven more. It is unclear whether this is referencing the same event. Al-Monitor has reached out to the Sudan Doctors Network for comment.
El Fasher Hospital is one of the last remaining operational medical facilities in the city and serves as a vital lifeline as the humanitarian crisis deepens under a siege that has lasted over a year and intensified in March, following the army’s recapture of Khartoum from the RSF.
