Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility is collaborating with China’s BYD to develop game-changing technology that could make electric vehicle charging up to four times quicker, with a rollout in the United Arab Emirates planned for next year, according to the managing director of the Emirati automotive firm.

A subsidiary of the Dubai-based conglomerate Al-Futtaim Group, AFEM sells electric and hybrid vehicles, charging infrastructure and related services across the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Based in Shenzhen, China, BYD is the world’s largest seller of electric vehicles. The company sold roughly 4.26 million new energy vehicles (NEVs, mainly hybrids) and 1.76 million pure electric vehicles (PEVs) globally last year.

In March 2023, AFEM partnered with the Chinese electric vehicle maker, becoming the distributor and seller of BYD cars in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. AFEM expects to sell at least 7,000 cars in the UAE this year, with about a quarter of them projected to be PEVs.
