Fourth Turkish drilling ship arrives from South Korea
Turkey's fourth drilling ship is set to bring the country's drilling fleet to another level.
Turkey’s fourth drilling ship has reached port. The Cobalt Explorer arrived in the Tasucu Port in the southern province Mersin today, Turkey's official Anadolu Agency reported, as did the shipping website MarineTraffic.
The vessel can operate at a depth of 3,600 meters and has a height of 104 meters. Its addition brings Turkey’s drilling fleet to another level, according to the agency.
Turkey’s state-owned energy company TPAO purchased the Cobalt Explorer last November from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding. It set sail from the East Asian country in March. The ship will be renamed, Anadolu said
Why it matters: Turkey has been conducting energy exploration in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and western Black Sea. Ankara's activities in the eastern Mediterranean have been a source of major contention between Greece, Cyprus and Turkey over conflicting territorial claims.
