Russia evacuates 160 staff from Iran's Bushehr plant: What to know
The Kremlin says it is committed to maintaining energy cooperation with Iran amid strikes near the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
Russia’s state nuclear energy giant, Rosatom, said on Wednesday it is withdrawing more than 160 personnel from Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, though it plans to maintain a reduced presence at the facility despite a second projectile landing nearby since the war began.
What happened: Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said Wednesday that the firm is currently evacuating a third group of personnel from the Bushehr plant since the war started, adding that a number of staff left for the Iran-Armenia border earlier on Wednesday.
“We, temporarily, until the situation normalizes, reduce the number of our specialists on the site to a minimum,” said Likhachev, Russian state media outlet Tass reported.
RIA, another state broadcaster, reported that Rosatom evacuated 163 staff members, citing Likhachev. About 300 employees remain at the site, though more are expected to leave. Earlier this month, Likhachev said 150 Rosatom personnel had already departed Iran.
