ANKARA — Europe’s top human rights court on Tuesday sent the case of jailed philanthropist Osman Kavala to its top decision-making judges and tightened procedural deadlines, signaling an effort to move forward a case that has stalled for years despite binding rulings ordering his release.
What happened: The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights said in a statement that it was compressing the usual timeline for third-party intervention in the case, cutting the standard 12-week window to six weeks, citing time constraints ahead of a planned Grand Chamber hearing on March 25, 2026.
The case centers on Turkey’s continued imprisonment of Kavala despite a 2019 ruling by the court ordering his immediate release.
Under the new decision, third parties seeking to intervene in the case must submit their requests by Jan. 29.
