NEW YORK CITY — A senior Qatari official said President Donald Trump’s new proposal to end the war in Gaza is a more far-reaching attempt at peace than past initiatives, but its success will ultimately hinge on Trump’s ability to get Israel on board. 

In an interview with Al-Monitor on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly summit in New York, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari described the 21-point plan Trump presented to Arab and Muslim leaders on Tuesday as “very ambitious.” 

“His new proposal for peace goes beyond any of the parameters of the [ceasefire] negotiations that have taken place so far,” Ansari said. “Hopefully President Trump can deliver Israel.” 

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with Trump in New York Tuesday as part of a group that included officials from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia and Pakistan. During the meeting, Trump laid out principles for a deal that includes a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the release of the 48 remaining hostages, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops and a vision for future governance in Gaza that precludes Hamas from holding power.
