Egypt holds second Senate vote as pro-Sisi parties dominate: What to know
The Senate elections, dominated by pro-Sisi government parties, feature fewer party list and individual candidates compared to elections held in 2020.
Egyptians cast their votes on Monday in the country’s second Senate election since the chamber was established in 2019, with the race largely dominated by pro-government parties.
What happened: Polls opened at 9 a.m. local time (2:00 a.m. ET) and are set to remain open until 9 p.m (2:00 pm ET). Voting is also scheduled for Tuesday. Approximately 69 million Egyptians are eligible to vote in this election, according to Egypt’s State Information Service.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi participated in the vote on Monday morning at a polling station in a Cairo district, according to a statement from his spokesperson on Facebook. Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly also voted on Monday, in Giza, according to a statement from the cabinet.
Meanwhile, Egyptians abroad began voting last Friday and finished Saturday at 136 polling stations across 117 countries.
