CAIRO — Russia's state-owned atomic energy company ROSATOM, which is implementing the Dabaa nuclear power plant project, Egypt’s first nuclear project, has received a construction permit to begin building the second unit of the power plant.

On Oct. 31, the board of directors of the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) granted permission to establish the second unit at the Dabaa nuclear power plant, northwest of Cairo.

According to an ENRRA statement, the authority received a request for a construction permit for the plant’s first and second units on Jan. 13, 2019. Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) completed its procedures over the course of two years by submitting a preliminary safety analysis report for the first and second units, according to the statement.

ENRRA granted a construction permit for the first unit on June 29.
