Amid the longstanding political deadlock followed by the parliamentary elections in October 2021, the Coordination Framework, which is the largest bloc in the Iraqi parliament, nominated Mohammed Shia al-Sudani for the prime minister position.

Sudani will be tasked to form the next government after the selection for the presidency takes place in the parliament.

“The Coordination Framework held today — Monday, July 25, 2022 — a meeting to choose its candidate for prime minister, and in a positive atmosphere the leaders of the Coordination Framework agreed unanimously to nominate Mr. Mohammed Shia al-Sudani for the premiership,” the Coordination Framework statement read.

Sudani is a member of the parliamentary committee supervising the government program and the Strategic Planning Committee. He served previously as minister of human rights from 2010 to 2014, and as minister of labor and social affairs from 2014 to 2018. He was also acting minister for the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Finance, and minister for the Ministry of Migration and Displaced, and Ministry of Agriculture.
