Meet Muzna al-Atrash, Syria's new Druze adviser for peace affairs
Atrash, from the Suwayda province and a member of the Druze community, will advise Damascus on peace affairs as it looks to assert authority in the south.
The Syrian government announced on Monday that Druze media personality and activist Muzna al-Atrash will serve as an adviser for peace affairs. Atrash is one of the most well-known Druze figures in the country and the appointment comes as the government seeks to extend its authority to the southern Suwayda province.
What happened: The official SANA news outlet reported that Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani made the appointment. The agency did not offer additional details about the role, and Atrash has not commented.
Atrash was born in Suwayda in 1987 and hails from the large Atrash Druze clan. She studied theater at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Damascus and holds a number of advocacy and media positions. Atrash is a member of the Syrian Women’s Advisory Board, the Federation of Arab Journalists and the Syrian Artists Syndicate. She is also a trainer and volunteer with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, focusing on disaster response, first aid and international humanitarian law, according to SANA.
The Syrian Women’s Advisory Board was established by the United Nations in 2016 to promote gender equality in the country.
