Deadline for sanctions snapback tests Iran’s resolve

Only 10 days remain before the E3's deadline to “snap back” sanctions on Iran expires. With the clock ticking, can Tehran persuade the Europeans to change course?

WASHINGTON — The ball is in Iran’s court. The Islamic Republic has until the end of the month to cooperate with the West or face the return of United Nations sanctions. 

The three European signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal — the United Kingdom, France and Germany — have warned they will move to reinstate previously lifted sanctions by Aug. 31. 

The countries, known as the E3, have offered to extend their deadline if Iran meets two conditions: restarting nuclear negotiations with the United States and cooperating with the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
