6.1 earthquake strikes northwest Turkey, killing 1 and injuring dozens
The tremor centered in Balikesir killed one and injured dozens, sparking panic in surrounding provinces including Istanbul.
ANKARA — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Turkey’s northwestern province of Balikesir on Sunday night, killing one person, injuring dozens and causing multiple buildings to collapse, according to Turkish authorities.
The quake hit at a depth of about 11 kilometers (7 miles) beneath the surface, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said.
Sixteen buildings collapsed across the province, AFAD reported.
An 81-year-old man who was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed building in the southern district of Sindirgi, the epicenter of the quake, later died in hospital, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced overnight.
