Sudan’s telecommunications regulator announced a nationwide block on voice and video calls via WhatsApp, citing national security concerns as the country continues to grapple with a deepening civil war and a decaying communications infrastructure.
What happened: In a statement issued on Sunday, the Telecommunications and Postal Regulatory Authority said the restriction was part of broader efforts to confront security threats and would remain in effect until further notice. Other WhatsApp features, including text messaging and group chatas, will remain available.
“This restriction comes within the framework of confronting security threats,” the statement read, describing the move as “a precautionary measure to protect national security and the highest interests of the country.”
The TPRA “expresses its regret for any inconvenience this measure may cause to subscribers, and appreciates their understanding of the importance of maintaining national security,” the statement read.
