More than 40 people including children and health workers were killed in what the World Health Organization’s chief Tuesday called an “appalling attack” at a hospital in Sudan's southern state of West Kordofan over the weekend.

What happened: On Saturday a drone strike hit the Al-Mujlad Referral Hospital in West Kordofan, where the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in heavy fighting amid the civil war.

WHO’s Sudan office confirmed Sunday that over 40 civilians were killed in the attack, including six children and five medics, and reported extensive damage to the facility. Dozens of others were also injured.

“Attacks on healthcare must not be tolerated and must end immediately,” the UN organization posted on X Tuesday.
