The Israeli government’s decision to dismiss Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar appears to be part of a broader effort to undermine the rule of law in favor of political interests, a move that could severely tarnish Israel’s reputation as a law-abiding state, according to legal and security experts who spoke to Al-Monitor.
What happened:
The controversy in Israel is intensifying following the government's decision last Friday to dismiss Bar. In response to petitions challenging the dismissal, the Israeli Supreme Court ordered a freeze on the procedure late Friday, pending deliberation. A court session is scheduled for April 8, just two days before the dismissal is set to take effect.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been pushing for Bar’s removal for several weeks, citing a loss of trust since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack. In a video released on Saturday, Netanyahu claimed Bar failed to wake him on the morning of the assault to warn him. He also alleged that Bar had not delivered the Shin Bet investigation on the attack by mid-February as instructed, and instead launched an investigation into associates of the prime minister over suspected financial ties to Qatar. Netanyahu suggested the investigation was an attempt by Bar to prevent his dismissal.
