In Qatar, Russia's Lavrov rejects European force in Ukraine, pushes for Syria access
During the visit, Russia and Qatar agreed to step up cooperation via a gas forum and their sovereign wealth funds and discussed the political transitions in Syria and Lebanon.
DUBAI — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected a European proposal backed by US President Donald Trump to deploy European peacekeepers in Ukraine during a visit to Qatar on Wednesday.
After he met Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Lavrov told reporters he ruled out European peacekeepers in Ukraine as part of a postwar solution.
"We cannot consider any options," he said in Doha. "Trump said that a decision on the deployment of peacekeeping forces would only be possible with the consent of both sides. Apparently referring to us and Ukraine. Nobody has asked us about this."
He was referencing President Donald Trump's comments on Monday in which he said Russian President Vladimir Putin was ready to accept European peacekeepers in Ukraine.
