UAE’s Jewish community in shock as arrests made in Israeli rabbi’s killing
The Israeli-Jewish community in the United Arab Emirates is horrified after the killing of prominent Israeli-Moldovan Rabbi Zvi Kogan.
The United Arab Emirates confirmed Monday that the three people arrested Sunday for their alleged involvement in the killing of Israeli-Moldovan Rabbi Zvi Kogan are from Uzbekistan.
Kogan, 28, went missing on Thursday. He was living in Abu Dhabi as emissary of the Orthodox Jewish Chabad group, which seeks to support Jewish life for those traveling or living outside of Israel.
According to Emirati state news agency WAM, the three arrested are Olimboy Tohirovich, Makhmudjon Abdulrakhim and Azizbek Kamilovich. In a photo accompanying the news, the three men are seen wearing black eye folds.
On Sunday afternoon, the Emirati Ministry of Interior announced it had arrested three suspects, without offering any other details. However, the statement said the country would use “all legal powers to respond decisively and without leniency to any actions or attempts that threaten societal stability.” An Israeli security delegation is expected to arrive to the Emirates to assist with the investigation.
