BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq’s parliament passed emergency legislation June 8 that will allow the government to use public funds for urgent food security and development needs.

According to a brief statement on the parliament's website, the law aims "to achieve food security, curb poverty, achieve financial stability in light of urgent global developments, to continue providing services to citizens.”

The new law seeks to be a partial alternative to the official budget for 2022, whose approval has been so far hampered by the political crisis in the country.

Nearly eight months after early legislative elections were held on Oct. 10, 2021, Iraq is still unable to form a new government.
