EU Commission chief says she will propose new measures targeting Israel

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -The European Commission will propose sanctioning extremist Israeli ministers and a partial suspension of the European Union's association agreement with Israel, targeting trade-related matters, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday.

"What is happening in Gaza has shaken the conscience of the world," von der Leyen said in a State of the Union speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, acknowledging divisions within Europe on how to move forward and pledging that the commission will do what it can on its own.

Missing limbs and loved ones, Gazan children begin treatment journey abroad

By Jana Choukeir

BEIRUT (Reuters) -Six-year-old Omar Abu Kuwaik still believes that by his next birthday, his missing hand will have grown back.

He is one of thousands of Palestinian children who have lost limbs and loved ones in Israel's bombing campaign of the Gaza Strip.

"It'll be big again when I turn seven", he tells his aunt, softly rubbing his left arm, which ends just below his elbow.

Omar was the lone survivor of an Israeli airstrike that flattened his grandparents' home in Gaza in December 2023, killing his parents, sister and extended family.

Russia condemns Israeli strike on Qatar as 'gross violation' of UN charter

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia on Wednesday condemned an Israeli attack against Hamas members in Qatar's capital Doha and urged all parties to refrain from actions that would further escalate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"Russia considers this incident a gross violation of international law and the UN Charter, an encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of an independent state, and a step leading to further escalation and destabilisation of the situation in the Middle East," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Syrian jailed for life over deadly knife attack at German festival

A Syrian man was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for killing three people in an Islamist-motivated knife attack at a summer festival in the German city of Solingen last year.

The court in Duesseldorf said Issa Al Hasan, 27, was a member of the Islamic State group and had acted out of "treacherous and base motives".

The stabbing spree in August 2024, in which another eight people were seriously wounded, took place on the opening night of a three-day "festival of diversity".

Qatar says Netanyahu must be 'brought to justice' over strikes

Qatar's prime minister warned Wednesday that an unprecedented Israeli strike in Doha targeting Hamas killed hope for Gaza hostages, calling for Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu to be "brought to justice".

His comments came a day after deadly strikes targeted Hamas leaders in Qatar -- a US ally -- a first in the oil-rich Gulf that rattled a region long shielded from conflict.

"I think that what Netanyahu has done yesterday, he just killed any hope for those hostages," Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told CNN.

The Israeli strike damaged the building on the left in the Doha compound used by Hamas leaders since they were allowed to open a political office in Qatar with US blessing in 2012.

He sustained the injury following a tackle and tried to play on but eventually had to limp off.

Omar Marmoush has scored eight goals in 28 games for Manchester City in all competitions since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt

The GSF, which is seeking to break Israel's naval blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to war-torn Gaza using civilian boats, said in a statement all passengers and crew were unharmed.

GSF reported the first attack on Tuesday saying one of its vessels had been struck by a drone in Tunisian waters, reports Tunisian authorities said were false.
