WASHINGTON — A cargo vessel was hit by at least one projectile in the Strait of Hormuz overnight, killing one Indian national and prompting the rescue of 19 other Indian seafarers, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Wednesday.

The ministry condemned the attack and said its embassy in Oman was coordinating with Omani authorities on the seafarers’ repatriation. It also called for an end to attacks on commercial shipping and for “dialogue and diplomacy” to de-escalate tensions.

The UK’s Maritime Trade Operations monitoring center reported the MV Cape Dao was hit “by an unknown projectile” around 06:30 a.m. GMT (10 a.m. local time) while sailing in the Strait of Hormuz.

“The vessel is on fire and adrift. All crew have been evacuated with two casualties reported,” the advisory group stated.
