Iran summons French ambassador after detaining 2 diplomats: What to know
Last week, France’s foreign minister said that two French diplomats had been detained and interrogated, and that one had been physically assaulted by Iranian security services.
Iran said Monday that it had summoned the French ambassador to Tehran, claiming French “interference in Iran's internal affairs.” The incident comes after two French Embassy staff members were detained by Iranian security forces on July 19.
What happened: Speaking to reporters on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said that France's ambassador to Iran, Pierre Cochard, was summoned by the ministry on Sunday.
The ministry “stressed” to the French ambassador that "the French government must cease such actions and such interference in Iran's internal affairs under misleading labels,” Baghaei said.
The summons follows competing accounts from Tehran and Paris over the July 19 detention of the two staff members.
