How Syria's border opening with Iraq redefines Turkey-Kurd balance
After years of closure, the reopening of al-Yaaroubiya crossing is redrawing Kurdish economic leverage and reinforcing Turkey’s regional strategy.
Syria’s al-Yaaroubiya border crossing with Iraq reopened Monday after more than a decade of closure. The move goes beyond easing the movement of goods and people — it will also reshape the balance of power in the region between Ankara, Baghdad, Damascus and the Kurds, analysts say.
The crossing connecting Iraq’s Nineveh province with al-Yaaroubiya city was sealed after the Islamic State occupied large swathes of both countries, including parts of their common borders, in 2014. In March, the two countries reopened the Al Waleed border crossing, allowing Iraq to sell its oil amid an export crunch triggered by Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz in February. A deal struck earlier this month between Turkey, Baghdad and Erbil revived oil sales through a pipeline running from the Kirkuk oil fields in federally controlled Iraq to export terminals in Turkey’s southern Mediterranean port of Ceyhan.
Access through al-Yaaroubiya will also expand overland tanker traffic. “The crossing holds significant economic, political and security importance, as it will be used for the exchange of goods and commodities and the export of oil,” Thamer Qasim Dawood, director general of Iraq’s General Authority of Customs, told Iraqi state media on Sunday.
In strategic terms, the openings allow Syria and Iraq to trade without having to rely on the Semalka-Fish Khabur border crossing that is controlled by the Kurdistan Regional Government on the Iraqi side and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces on the Syrian side.
