Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Thursday that the top naval commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Adm. Alireza Tangsiri, was killed in a strike, calling him “the person directly responsible for the terror operation of mining and blocking the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic.” Iran did not immediately comment on the claim.

The Israeli military later released a statement saying that it killed Tangsiri in a strike in the coastal city of Bandar Abbas.

US Central Command issued a statement praising Israel for the operation.

Tangsiri had extensive involvement in developing Iran’s capabilities and his death marks another blow to the country’s military apparatus.
