Putin becomes first to congratulate Mojtaba Khamenei: What to know
Oman, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Armenia have all congratulated the Khamenei's son.
Russia became the first country on Monday to congratulate Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of late slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on becoming the Islamic Republic's third supreme leader, followed by messages of congratulations from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Tajikistan and Hezbollah.
What happened: On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message of praise to Mojtaba Khamenei, less than 24 hours after news of his election, according to the Kremlin. Putin said, “At a time when Iran is confronting armed aggression, your work in this high office will undoubtedly require great courage and dedication,” adding that he was confident the new leader would continue his father’s work.
Putin added, “I want to confirm our unwavering support of Tehran and our solidarity with our Iranian friends. Russia has been and will remain the Islamic Republic’s reliable partner.”
Russia’s backing comes amid reports that Moscow has shared military intelligence with Tehran to support Iran's operations against US assets in the region.
