What happened: The State Department on Monday declared the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group, and will also list it as a Foreign Terrorist Organization on March 16.

In a press statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood and its armed wing, al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade, of “unrestrained violence” against civilians during the ongoing civil war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, with the aim to undermine peace efforts and advance a “violent Islamist ideology.”
