Thousands rally for South Yemen independence amid Saudi diplomatic push

Large protests called for southern independence in Yemen on Friday, reflecting persistent support for the separatists despite the Saudi-backed government’s efforts to assert control over areas they previously controlled. 

Local outlets broadcast footage of thousands of people waving the flag of South Yemen in Aden alongside the banners of the Southern Transitional Council. The STC is backed by the United Arab Emirates. 

Other protests were reported in al-Mukalla, al-Ghayda and Hadhramout, per local media. 

The STC, a separatist organization that wants independence for southern Yemen, issued a statement on Thursday calling for protests on Friday in support of their cause.
