Syria's Sharaa, Saudi crown prince discuss economic ties as SDF clashes flare

Syria is facing a number of security challenges amid sectarian tensions as it rebuilds its economy.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday to discuss economic cooperation following a string of energy and investment deals between the two countries. 

What happened: The official Saudi Press Agency reported that Crown Prince Mohammed received a call from Sharaa, during which the two discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and other areas of mutual interest. 

The two specifically discussed economic development and investment, as well as regional issues, the official Syrian news outlet SANA reported.

Background: Saudi Arabia is deepening its economic commitments to Syria, showing particularly strong signs of interest in energy and construction. In December, the state-run Syrian Petroleum Company signed a number of deals with Saudi firms to develop hydrocarbon fields across Syria.
