Jordanian banks are well positioned to support reconstruction and development efforts in Syria’s economy after 13 years of civil war that decimated the country’s infrastructure, according to the Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan Adel Sharkas.

What happened: Speaking at the Jordanian-Syrian Banking Summit on Wednesday, Sharkas said three Jordanian lenders currently operate in the Syrian market, Jordan’s state news agency Petra reported. One of them is the Bank of Jordan, which has 14 branches in Syria, according to its website.

Sharkas said there were significant opportunities to share Jordan’s banking sector expertise, digital finance and fintech with Syria.

He added that cooperation would help modernize Syria’s banking sector and strengthen economic ties between the two countries, at a time when Damascus seeks to attract foreign investment and expand into international markets.
