Three members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were killed on Wednesday in the impoverished southeast Sistan and Baluchistan province amid reports of a newly formed insurgent group operating in the area.

What happened: The IRGC said in a statement that the soldiers were killed in the Lar border region, near the provincial capital Zahedan, by unspecified “terrorist and hostile groups.” The attack occurred while the soldiers were on duty and the corps has since launched a search operation to track down those responsible, according to the statement.

Lar lies roughly 8 miles (13 kilometers) west of the Pakistani border.

No organization has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
