Syria foils major arms smuggling attempt to Lebanon: What we know

Syrian authorities have stepped up operations targeting smuggling attempts mainly destined for Hezbollah in Lebanon since the fall of President Bashar al‑Assad’s regime last year.

The Internal Security Directorate in the Zabadani area of rural Damascus thwarted an attempt to smuggle a shipment of weapons and seized large quantities of RPG shells that were hidden in an organized manner and prepared for smuggling towards Lebanon, on Dec. 17, 2025.

Syria’s security forces foiled on Wednesday an attempt to smuggle a large shipment of weapons into Lebanon, as authorities intensify their efforts to secure the porous Lebanese-Syrian border.

What happened: Following intensive surveillance, Syrian security forces ambushed smugglers in Serghaya, a town in the Damascus countryside near the Lebanese border, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. During the operation, forces seized a large quantity of RPG shells that were concealed “in an organized manner” in preparation to be smuggled across the border.

The seized shipment was subsequently handed over to relevant authorities for further legal action.

“This operation is part of the Ministry of Interior's ongoing efforts to combat smuggling, secure the borders, and protect national security and stability,” the ministry said in its statement.
