Qatar’s prime minister meets US officials as Gaza plan stalls
Sheikh Mohammed's visit comes as questions mount over Hamas' disarmament and the role of international troops in post-war Gaza.
WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Wednesday with Qatar’s prime minister, as the United States and its regional allies struggle to implement the next phase of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani’s trip to Washington comes as the mediators work to structure Hamas’ disarmament, the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the deployment of an international security force as outlined in President Donald Trump's 20-point peace plan for Gaza released in late September.
Sheikh Mohammed also discussed the Gaza ceasefire Tuesday with House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.) and the panel’s ranking member, Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), a source familiar with the meeting said.
The prime minister is visiting Washington for the latest round of the US-Qatar Strategic Dialogue between the two countries that helped broker the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, halting the war that killed more than 70,000 Palestinians and displaced an overwhelming majority of Gaza’s population.
