Russia, Iran deepen nuclear cooperation with focus on small reactors
Russia has moved to help Iran with its nuclear program as European states trigger snapback sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
A Russian nuclear delegation met Iranian officials in Tehran on Wednesday to accelerate plans for new reactors, signaling an expansion of energy cooperation between the two heavily sanctioned countries.
Deputy Rosatom CEO Nikolay Spassky held talks with Atomic Energy Organization of Iran chief Mohammad Eslami and other officials on a variety of nuclear issues, including the construction of 1,250-megawatt power units. The two sides agreed to arrange a visit by Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev to Tehran at an unspecified time to receive updates on the construction of new units at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant, Russia’s official Tass news agency reported.

The official Islamic Republic News Agency reported that the conversation focused on the construction of small modular reactors and the planned Iran Hormoz plant in addition to the 1,250-MW units.
Small modular reactors have capacities of up to 300 MW per unit, about a third of the capacity of traditional reactors.
