After launching heavy overnight aerial attacks on the Gaza Strip, the Israeli military announced it had resumed adherence to the Gaza ceasefire as of 10:00 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

A statement issued by the military said that "in accordance with the directive of the political echelon, and following a series of strikes in which dozens of terror targets and terrorists were struck, the army has begun the renewed enforcement of the ceasefire in response to Hamas’ violations."

After militants fired at troops conducting engineering work in the southern city of Rafah on Tuesday, the Israeli military launched air and artillery strikes across multiple locations in Gaza.

One Israeli soldier was killed in the incident, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to instruct the military to launch "powerful" strikes against Hamas. Hamas, for its part, denied involvement in the deadly Rafah attack.
