Israel claims responsibility for killing Houthi military chief in strike: What to know
Following the announcement of Ghamari’s death, the Houthis appointed Maj. Gen. Yusuf Hassan al-Madani as his successor.
Israel has taken responsibility for the killing of the Houthis’ military chief of staff, Maj. Gen. Muhammad Abd Al-Karim al-Ghamari, whose death was confirmed by the Houthis on Thursday.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Ghamari was among the targets of a “powerful” Israeli strike and “died of his wounds.” While Katz did not specify which strike Ghamari was killed in, there is speculation that he was killed in Israel’s Aug. 28 strikes on the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, which also killed Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi and other senior officials. Following those attacks, several Arab media outlets reported Ghamari’s death.
Ameen Hayyan, the Houthi spokesperson who announced Ghamari’s death on Thursday, did not provide details on the circumstances or the exact timing of his death.
A statement released by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said, “Another chief-of-staff in the line of terror chiefs who aimed to harm us was eliminated. We will reach all of them.”
