As Syria finalizes candidates for parliament, women make up 14% of list
Syria’s parliamentary elections are set for Sunday, when electoral committees will select 140 lawmakers before President Ahmed al-Sharaa appoints the remaining 70.
Syria’s parliamentary elections committee has finalized the candidate list for next month’s vote with 1,578 approved contenders, and women account for around 14% of them.
Syrian state news agency SANA reported on Monday that the Supreme Committee for People's Assembly Elections, the body responsible for overseeing the vote as well as establishing electoral subcommittees and approving candidates, released a list of eligible candidates across the 50 electoral districts nationwide.
Campaigning began Monday and will continue until Oct. 3, ahead of election day on Sunday, Oct. 5.
Chairman of the committee Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad told SANA that there are 1,578 candidates, among them 221 women. Ahmad did not provide details on minority group representation, including Druze, Kurdish or Alawite candidates.
