The embargo leaves room for exceptions where Spain’s “national interests” are concerned.

Spain’s government imposed a "total" arms embargo on Israel on Tuesday following weeks of tension between Israel and Spain over the war in Gaza.

Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo announced the decision after a meeting of Spain’s Council of Ministers. Speaking from the Moncloa Palace in Madrid, he said that the government intends to step up pressure on Israel "in all areas."

Key restrictions: The decree sets out four measures, according to Spanish reports. The first is a complete arms embargo on Israel, blocking all exports and imports of defense equipment, dual-use goods and technologies. The second bars shipments of aviation fuel through Spain if the material could be used by Israel for military purposes. The third is a ban on importing goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The final is a prohibition on advertising and marketing products or services linked to those settlements.

There will be a quarterly review for Spain’s legislature to monitor its implementation.
