Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, known as Irro, is expected to begin a landmark visit to the United States in the coming days, as Washington reportedly considers recognizing the breakaway region in northern Somalia.

Somaliland’s Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Adan announced the upcoming visit in a statement carried by the official Somaliland News Agency on Monday, saying it aims to “strengthen the country's interests.”

“In the past, the world did not need us. But now the world has understood that we are an important country that the Horn of Africa, Africa and the world need,” he said, stressing that no one can oppose the recognition of Somaliland’s independence.

Adan added that the White House is currently debating the recognition of Somaliland.
